Snub for Referendum

Daily Mail

THE Foreign Secretary dismissed growing calls for a referendum on the revived European constitution.

Mr Miliband clung to the Government's claim that the document will not mean fundamental changes in the UK's relationship with Brussels.

But he faced embarrassment over claims that the police and Bournemouth council have been erasing protesters' slogans in the sand outside the conference hotel. 'I want a referendum' has been spelt out out in large letters on the beach below Gordon Brown's hotel window each night this week, only to disappear at dawn.

Mr Miliband insisted the decision on the treaty should be by MPs. And he warned that 'navelgazing' about EU structures was distracting Europe from more important challenges.
